About
Open Fit Hearing Instruments
An open fit hearing aid is a behind-the-ear hearing instrument that has a
slim tube and a small non-custom earpiece called a “dome.” This
type of hearing aid is specifically designed to meet the needs of patients with
a high frequency hearing loss.
In the past, hearing aid wearers with a high frequency hearing loss often
complained regarding the unnatural sound quality of their voice and/or a “plugged
up” sensation. Traditional behind the ear or custom in-the-ear hearing
aids closed or “plugged” the ear canal preventing unnecessary low
frequencies from escaping the ear canal. These low pitches are most often the
cause of an unnatural voice quality and/or a “plugged” sensation.
Open fit hearing aids have a small earpiece or “dome” that replaces
the occluding behind-the-ear earmold or custom in-the-ear hearing aid. This
dome has several vents or “holes.” The vents allow unnecessary low
pitch sounds to escape resulting in a more natural quality to your voice.
